26 Israhel van Meckenem, Battle for the Pants, Germany late fifteenth century

Another common literary and artistic motif that both reflected and shaped real behavior was the ‘battle of the pants’, in which a husband and wife fight over his pants, which, then as now, stood for control over the household. In this engraving, the wife has her distaff, on which she spun thread, raised against her husband; the distaff was the most common symbol for women and the female side of the family, which is still occasionally called the ‘distaff’ side. Men in the sixteenth century wore pants over their hose, and tied both on with long strings.
